Description |
The Trumpet, afterwards the Duke of York, Shire Lane 1778. Elias Ashmole's house from prints in Mr. Crace's collection. (Top, inset) The Trumpet, afterwards the Duke of York, Shire Lane 1778. (note: ...the Trumpet, in Shire-Lane, Temple Bar, whence the Tatlers were dated, still exists as the Duke-of-York public house."). The Kit-Cat Club met at the Trumpet Tavern. The first meetings were held at a tavern in Shire Lane (parallel with Bell Yard and now covered by the Royal Courts of Justice) run by an innkeeper called Christopher Catt. He gave his name to the mutton pies known as "Kit Cats" from which the name of the club is derived. (Below) Elias Ashmole's house from prints in Mr. Crace's collection. South west view of an antient structure in Shipyard, Temple Bar. Supposed to have been the residence of Elias Ashmole. Esq. The celebrated antiquarian. Elias Ashmole's house. Probably derived from an engraving after R. B. Schnebbelie, 1815. Ship yard, Temple bar |
