Lantern Slide (black and white); view of two anthropomorphic stone sculpture, surrounded by trees; a Polynesian(?) man sitting beside the second sculpture in the background, for scale, wearing a plant fibre hat; Raivavae, Polynesia. Image: Oc,G.T.1672 close-up of sculpture in the background, now in the Papeete Museum in Tahiti. Context: Both sculptures are approx two and three metres high. The smaller sculpture in the foreground is now in the Gaugin Museum in Tahiti. Overview of Routledge collection: This collection of lantern slides were photographed during two archaeological expeditions, conducted by William Scoresby Routledge and his wife Katherine Maria Routledge. The majority of the collection was photographed during the ‘Mana Expedition’ in 1913-1915 to Easter Island, which also stopped in Chile and Juan Fernandez Islands on route. Whilst in Chile, Routledge enlisted the aid of Chilean men and boys. One boy from Juan Fernandez is depicted in a number of images, used as a scale guide. Subsequent expeditions to Mangareva, Raivaevae, and Rapa Iti were made in 1921-1923, during which a smaller number of images were made. |
