Description

Dolostones in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

This outcrop of ochre/yellowish-brown colored rocks is part of the Middle to Upper Mississippian Slade Formation in Kentucky. The unit was formerly known as the Newman Limestone ("They always change the names to protect the innocent!"). Slade Formation limestones are shallow ocean deposits. The Renfro itself is a very shallow marine/marginal marine carbonate unit dominated by dolostones.

At this site, the Renfro is atop the Nada Member of the Borden Formation, with Cowbell Member below that. Above the Renfro (= very top of photo) is the St. Louis Limestone.

Stratigraphy: Renfro Member, lower Slade Formation, Meramecian, Middle Mississippian
