Description
English: Reverse of a Russian paid stampless folded letter Odessa to Marseille. '1865 ODESSA ..' cancel, manuscript '2' weight class rate, boxed 'AUS RUSSLAND FRANCO' (T.P.O.) transit, various transits and arrival backstamp Marseille.

Details:

  • February 18 (Gregorian) paid letter posted at Odessa. Sender wrote 'Franco' and the post office confirmed by placing large circular handstamp 'FRANCO' (paid) and 'ODESSA' postmark.
Dobin: Odessa 57.1.01 type 1.10, 37x29mm. Postmark for foreign mail, used 1857-1866, Rarity 3.[1]
  • February 25, 1865 (Gregorian) 'BRESLAU 25 2 BERLIN' T.P.O. backstamp applied.
  • February. 'AUS RUSSLAND FRANCO' boxed 35x13mm marking on Russian mail. This marking was used on bagged mail from South Russia which was sorted in transit to Berlin. Used on franco (paid) and porto (unpaid) letters.
Vandervelde: type Ry 7.
  • February 28. 'PRUSSE VALENCIENNES 28 FEV. 65' French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at the border town of Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris.

  • February 28. 'PARIS 28 FEV. 65' transit backstamp.
  • March 1. 'MARSEILLE 1 MARS 65 (12)' receiver backstamp.
