Description

These baskets were at the base of one of the paintings in the 13th century rock-hewn Church of Bet Giorgis in Lalibela, Ethiopia.

I'm pretty sure the basket on the left contains incense, and the basket on the left is filled with grain. I'm not sure what the purpose of the white bundle in the middle basket (which I think also holds incense) might be.

If you look closely at the upper right corner, you'll see part of a large, clawed foot on a canvas. It undoubtedly belongs to a dragon who was unlucky enough to encounter St. George.

This is the latest in my series of impressionist photographs. I produce these images by taking photos in very limited available light, then processing them very gently to increase the exposure and reduce the noise.

If you want to get technical, this photo was shot at f/1.4 at 1/60th of a second at ISO 1600. If you know the Nikon D70, you'll know it's not at its best much over ISO 400. I'm not saying this photo is the equivalent of an image of the Titanic shot with available light (i.e., none), but it's close.

I like the result. Truly, I do - in this case. To my eye, it has the look and feel of a good still-life painting. And it's the type of detail of a far-away place that I'd never remember without this photo to jog my memory. Still and all, I took many other photos under similar conditions, and most of them only prove the old saying about silk purses and sows' ears. You won't be seeing them.

Would I prefer a photo taken under better lighting conditions, so there would be more detail and less noise? Well, sure. But you upload the photo you have, not the photo you'd like to have.
