wiped out the indebt-edness of the Association. The following winter basket ball was introduced, and thegood effects of the organization were at once visible in theregular schedule and business management. Howard Universitystudents and Armstrong and M Street High School studentsmet in the armory of M Street High School several eveningsa week at the close of the foot ball season and were coachedin basket ball by Mr. Henderson. Not one student of eitherschool had ever seen a basket ball game played. In a shortwhile three teams at Howard University were formed and oneat each High School, all of whom practiced at the M StreetArmory. Athletic clubs of young men began to form all over thecity and ask for the privilege of pi lying under the protection ofthe Association, which requests were always granted whenpossible; thus what may be properly termed wild-cat athleticsbegan to give way to organized control and the high ideals ofthe manly sports were held before both public and participants.

SPALDINGS ATHLETIC LIBRARY. 21 The Association is now planning to add archery, swim-ming, wrestling and soccer foot ball to its list of sports, as wellas other games which will allow the female students of theseinstitutions to compete and reap the benetits of athletic train-ing. Basket ball has proved immensely popular, and at the closeof the last season the I. S. A. A. found itself with a surplus of$300 on hand. This sum, after deducting a sufficient reserve tomeet the requirements of opening the next season, was dividedbetween the treasuries of the respective schools and clubs in theleague. There has been some complaint and dissatisfaction on thepart of the members of some of the teams, growing out of therestrictions put upon them, but the Association feels sure thatwhen they realize the ideal
