English: Coming out of the Gangoji (also spelt Gango-ji) temple in Nara, Japan, I find myself in the preserved old town district of Naraachi in this city. I did not realize it at that time however, as I was looking for a place where one can taste pure Japanese Sake (rice wine) straight out of the brewery. I asked for directions from the chief monk, much to his consternation. I found out about Naramachi only while researching information for the captioning of the photos in this album. Most of the houses in this part of Nara -the preserved Naramachi district- are really historic. Just to the east of Nara Park, the narrow, winding streets of traditional merchant houses of Naramachi now host sweet shops, modern art galleries, hip cafes and boutique ryokan. (traditional Japanese inn). With shops like Yu Nakagawa, Naramachi is a great place to find contemporary Nara crafts and stylish souvenirs. The whole area is compact and easy to cover on foot. Alongside Nara Park and Nishinokyo, Naramachi is one of Nara City's main draws. As proclaimed by the sign outside this house, this was originally an Okada family home, built originally as a midwife's home in the mid 19th century. (Nara, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)
