  • 東京近代水道100周年と小河内ダム竣工40周年の記念事業として建設された。
  • 奥多摩郷土資料館（1978年開館）が前身で、その跡地に建設された。
  • 1998年11月27日開館。
  • 建物前に見えるバス停留所は、西東京バス「奥多摩湖」停留所。
