English: Old Great Eastern Railway Third 6 wheeler carriage. This GER coach is now grounded at Southwold Harbour, it has been cut in half and this is the remaining half. It is currently full as a store. It was most likely built at Stratford works (site of the Olympics stadiums). Probably built in the 1890s, it would have looked like this 1541778.
Here is a good photo of one in service at Kings Lynn during the 1st World War. http://www.remembernorfolk.org/viewlarge.aspx?GI=23&MI=51000230105. A typical train would have been hauled by a Claud Hamilton or E4 in GER royal Blue. http://www.remembernorfolk.org/viewlarge.aspx?GI=23&MI=51000230130. http://craigrailpics.fotopic.net/p57484789.html They were generally withdrawn in the 1920s and 30s I believe, some went into departmental services and lasted longer (I have seen footage of wire hangers standing on the roofs when wiring up the mainlines in London). |
