   Old market hall and court house. Dated 1596. Coursed and
   squared rubble with plain tiled roof.
   Upper storey is carried on an arcaded ground floor, with
   semicircular arches and Doric columns. Single arch with
   bulbous responds in each gable, and angle buttresses. SW gable
   has 2 mullioned and transomed windows flanking a statue of a
   man in armour. A plaque records that this statue was removed
   from a tower on the Welsh bridge in 1791. A further plaque
   beneath the windows records: "The XV day of June was this
   building begonn William Jones and Thomas Chartts gent then
   bayliffs and was erected and covered in their time". The date
   of 1596 is below this, and the Royal and Salop arms flank it.
   All this carving including the lettering is gilded on a
   painted ground. Coped gable with elaborate scrolled kneelers,
   and finial. Clock with hoodmould over in gable apex.
   Side elevations each have an arcade of 3 bays each side of a
   central gable. The shafts have an exaggerated entasis, and
   there are mullioned and transomed windows over. Eaves cornice
   with scroll decoration. Central gable has a single blind arch
   with beasts carved on the bulbous responds. Date and coat of
   arms in elaborate Mannerist niche over, and a 7-light
   mullioned and transomed window above. In the roof, a central
   wood cupola with weather vane.
