Summary
editDescriptionOld Post Office, Glenville, NC (45709733415).jpg | This is the old Glenville Post Office, located on Old Post Office Road in Glenville, North Carolina. Constructed around 1940-41, the post office was built as the town was being moved out of the valley of the West Fork of the Tuckaseigee River to make way for Lake Glenville, which displaced a few hundred residents, along with their stores, churches, cemeteries, and homes. The only place not affected by the lake’s construction was the town’s school, a brick structure built in 1926, which sat high on a hill overlooking the town, and remained on the lakeshore once the dam was completed and the reservoir was filled. The building is remarkably similar in design to the old Cowarts Post Office on Caney Fork Road, and was similarly built using concrete masonry construction. The building features two doors, one for mail delivery and one for customer access, and simple craftsman-style features, including externally exposed rafter beams and three-over-one windows. The building remained in use as the local post office until after World War II, and has since been home to some community organizations, including a branch of Southwestern Community College at one point, but has since become vacant and was recently boarded up. The building is an important piece of the town’s history around the time the lake was created, and would be nice to see adaptively reused as a local history museum or historical society office, though the small size does make it difficult to adaptively reuse the structure. Still, finding some use to it would be ideal, as it does help showcase the town’s resilience in the face of obliteration for a hydroelectric project during the 1940s, and the perseverance of the townsfolk in the face of the major setback they were dealt. |
