Description
English: Built in 1891 of locally-sourced brick, this Gothic Revival-style church features colorful stained glass windows, a circular rose window, a tower with an open wooden belfry, extensive brick corbeling, and a small glass addition on the south side. St. Richard’s was the first church built in the Northwestern portion of Montana. The building served as the first school in Columbia Falls, before a purpose-built school was built nearby. The building continued to serve the congregation until the mid-20th Century, when it became inadequate due to the growth of the congregation spurred by the growth of the town, and moved to a new church at the corner of 9th Street West and 12th Avenue West, which it continues to occupy. The building was saved from demolition and adaptively reused, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
