Summary
editDescriptionOld Toll Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 1073564.jpg |
English: Old Toll Bridge Alternatively known as Old Shoreham Bridge. A ferry crossing existed here in medieval times taking those from Old Shoreham across the river and marshes to the Pad Inn. The ferry was precarious enough for the powers that be to consider building a bridge which was duly constructed out of wood in 1782 and remained the main crossing point until 1822 when the Norfolk Bridge was built further south. The bridge became the A27 and carried motor traffic albeit in one direction at a time until 1968 when a new crossing was built further north. In 1970 it closed to motorised traffic for good and is now a popular foot and cycle bridge. During 2007 it was refurbished and reopened during in autumn 2008. |
