Summary edit
DescriptionOld Town Theater, 815 1-2 King Street, Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.jpg |
English: The Old Town Theater, located at 815 1/2 King Street between Alfred and Columbus Streets in the Old Town of Alexandria, Virginia, opened in 1914 as the Richmond Theater to show silent films and present vaudeville acts. It was the first permanent theater in the city. Until c.1932, there was a theater on the first floor and a dance hall on the second floor, which was later replaced with a balcony. The two floors were divided in 1980 to make twin movie theaters. The theatre closed in 1999 and re-opened in February 2002 after renovations and technical upgrading, and the screen was removed for the presentation of live plays; at the end of the year it was closed. The theater re-opened in February 2004, but closed in January 2012. Later in 2012 the facade was restored and the theater opened again. It closed once more in 2014. In 2015, the building was sold to a local businessman, and then in January 2018, shortly before his death, by a North Carolina-based real-estate company. which as of March 2018 was looking for a new tenant, possible not a theatrical one. As of March 2019, the theater was still closed. (Sources: Cinema Treasures, Biz Journals, and Patch) |
