| Description | Located near the center of the old business district in Whittier, North Carolina’s Swain County side of the river is the old Whittier Hotel, built during the 1880s when the town was in its infancy to serve travelers and visitors to the town, whom stopped at the railroad depot just across the street. The old hotel is the most historically significant structure left in the town, but has been left abandoned for years, with plans to renovate the building falling through multiple times. Though it appears structurally sound for the most part, owing to the longevity of the tin roof, the building has become rather dilapidated, and does need some sort of intervention. The building is one of a few remnants of the old business district that grew up around the Whittier depot during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century in the town’s heyday, when a strong economy based around a lumber mill made the town a vibrant commercial center. However, the collapse of the lumber industry during the Great Depression in the 1930s hit the town hard, and it disincorporated in 1933. Today, the town is but a shell of its former self, with the old hotel, converted to residential use during the downturn before being eventually left vacant, yet another husk of this once-vibrant, diminished, and faded pseudo-ghost town. |
