Summary
editDescriptionOld cast-iron lamp standards, Infirmary Street - geograph.org.uk - 1454565.jpg |
English: Old cast-iron lamp standards, Infirmary Street This short street just off South Bridge is home to three cast-iron lighting columns. The two columns to the left of the picture are Falkirk Iron Co products while the one to the right, outside the former swimming baths, is a Mackenzie Bros column which is thought to be the oldest surviving one of its kind in Edinburgh.
In 2002, the column nearest the photographer had its original bracket removed and it remained like this until autumn 2008, when a replacement one was fitted. The replica teardrop lanterns seen here were installed in May 2009, which will surely guarantee the long-term survival of these relics, barring errant drivers. |
