English: Old field walls around Broad Head. In the South Pennines the Explorer map is perhaps even more important than elsewhere for showing the pattern of field boundaires, as there is such a complexity of stone walls and other boundaries. In this example the Landranger map would suggest open moorland, where in fact there has been enclosure and farming in the past. The house at the left of the photo looks inhabited but is not named on either map. |
