English: Old harbour at Newhaven, Bremore, Co. Dublin In 1562 James and Margaret Barnwell were granted the right to build a 'fisher towne and pier or harbour' at Bremore. On a map of the barony of Balrothery in 1655-56, part of the 'Down Survey' of forfeited properties during the Cromwellian period, Newhaven is shown as a cluster of houses on a headland with a long narrow quay enclosing a harbour on the south side of the promontory of Bremore. The contemporary Civil Survey describes it as 'a fishing towne' with ten small cottages. In 1714 the Corporation of Drogheda complained that certain merchants in the town were entering goods at 'the Skerrys', ie Skerries, Co. Dublin, and at Newhaven so as to avoid paying water customs. Newhaven was eclipsed in the mid-18th century by the development of the harbour at nearby Balbriggan by the local landowner George Hamilton. The harbour wall at Newhaven is still discernible as a tumble of large boulders, 120m long, joining outcropping bedrock to the shore. There is no trace of the 'fishing towne' in the flat tillage fields above the harbour. |
