Description
English: Old trenches by the Bushman's Road The MOD ranges at Otterburn http://www.army.mod.uk/ate/public/otterburn.htm are the site of numerous "Archeological Areas" all signed "No digging, no vehicles" from all periods of history. It may be hard to believe on the basis of what little can be seen from the road that this area is scheduled as an ancient monument. It is in fact a series of trenches which were dug in 1912 by the War Office on newly acquired land. They were used for training purposes in World War I (1914-1918) and are probably the best preserved in the country. Although they are now partially silted up, some trenches remain over 2m deep in places and the dog-leg and diamond shape can still be traced http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRNMAP=N374.
