Description
English: Satirical book illustration apparently dating from the 1660s, used in 1713 as the frontispiece to "A Vindication of the Royal Martyr, King Charles I .... By the celebrated Mr Butler, Author of Hudibras" which was included in "The Secret History of the Calf's Head Club" (1713; see 1868,0626.651.4) as a satire on the Low Church opponents of Dr Sacheverell. The devil and and eleven men are seated around a table; over their heads two devils draw back curtains held up by shields bearing the cross of St George and an Irish harp. Each figure is identified by letters A-M corresponding to a key beneath, all are regicides except for the last two, these being chaplains who supported the execution of Charles I: the Devil, Oliver Cromwell, John Bradshaw (described as "Pres" with reference to his position as lord president of the high court of justice during the trial of Charles I), Thomas Scott, Colonel Thomas Harrison, Colonel John Barkstead, Cornelius Holland, John Jones, John Lisle, William Say, Hugh Peters, John Goodwin.
