Summary edit

Description

This is a coal-burning, S-4 0-8-0 steam locomotive that was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1910. It was originally used as a road switcher for the Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railroad (which later became part of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway) in Minnesota, USA.

In the 1920s, the locomotive was sold to & renumbered by the Oliver Iron Mining Company (a precursor of United States Steel Corporation). From the 1920s to the 1950s, it was used at various iron mines in the iron ranges of northern Minnesota. It serviced a large open-pit iron mine in the town of Mountain Iron, Minnesota in the 1940s and 1950s. It was retired from service in 1955, when diesel locomotive power was introduced.

This engine is currently on display at the Mountain Iron Locomotive Park in Mountain Iron, Minnesota.

The iron ores at the Mountain Iron Open-Pit Mine are part of the Biwabik Iron-Formation, a ~1.878 billion years old unit in the Paleoproterozoic of Minnesota.
