| Description |
English: One of the New Islands at College Lake College Lake Nature Reserve http://www.bbowt.org.uk/content.asp?did=23523 is based on a huge quarry which supplied chalk to the former Pitstone Cement Works. The area shown in this picture was, until recently, laid out as water meadows, with ponds and wet areas which were allowed to flood and encourage waders and other birds which like that kind of environment. Unfortunately the water level in the quarry has risen more than was originally expected and in 2008 three islands were created, and the area allowed to flood. |
