Description

Het 'HAL-monument' is opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan de Holland Amerikalijn medewerkers die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn omgekomen.

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn 264 medewerkers van de Holland Amerikalijn omgekomen. De meeste schepen van de Holland Amerika Lijn lagen tijdens de Tweede wereldoorlog stil. De schepen die zich buitengaats bevonden op het moment dat de oorlog uitbrak, werden door de geallieerden ingezet, bijvoorbeeld om manschappen te vervoeren. Een aantal van die schepen is getorpedeerd door U-boten. Daarbij zijn veel bemanningsleden om het leven gekomen.
