DescriptionOrgan Grinder, Original Raffin Cherliegen barrel organ, and Bruder Mechanical Band Organ "Columbia" - Music House Museum.jpg |
Behind this modern organ grinder is the Bruder Mechanical Band Organ. The Columbia was made by the Bruder family of organ builders at Waldkirk in the Black Forest area of Germany. It was imported by Berni of New York in 1913 and sold to an amusement park in Wildwood, New Jersey. For many years its powerful voice was heard from a rooftop pavilion overlooking the park. These instruments usually has several ranks of pipes and limited percussion - usually base drum, snare drum, and cymbal. All are loud voiced on high air pressure to be heard over the din of the carousel, carnival, circus, skating rink, or amusement park and to act as a Pied Piper to draw crowds. The Columbia has a keyless book system. A continuous folder perforated cardboard music book is passed over a tracker bar similar to those in player pianos. A pneumatic pouch-and-valve system causes appropriate pipes to speak and makes register changes. |
