DRAFTED MEN PARADING IN CHICAGO It is a record that is worthy of a great state—a state which, when it wentto war, gave itself unreservedly to its new and solemn task with the samespirit that in long years of peace had put it in a place of leadership amongthe commonwealths of the nation. Hundreds of men, as well as many women, of Illinois were playing apart in the world conflict long before the United States entered the war.Some were fighting on the western front, others were wearing the uniform ofthe Red Cross nurse or the welfare worker. Love of adventure, sympathyfor the peoples engaged in the struggle, and a desire to aid in relieving thesufferings of the fighting men and the starving refugees were the compel-ling motives for the sacrifices made by these early volunteers in the cause ofright and justice. To the adventurous souls who wished to get most quickly into the thickof the fighting, the greatest appeal was made by the Lafayette Escadrille,the famous American aviation unit
