English: Original ground-level south busway at the 1927-built Fields Corner station in January 2004, shortly before it was demolished and replaced with a modern station. The busway originally served buses to Uphams Corner (route 18) and Adams Street (21), with paper transfers required to enter fare control. Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway streetcars were bustituted and began using the lower level in 1948. The streetcar ramps on the upper level were paved for trackless trolley use in 1948, and the 18 and 21 were moved upstairs in the 1950s. When the Park Street (Fields Corner) Carhouse was closed in the 1960s and a shopping mall took its place, the lower level busway was cut off and Eastern Massachusetts buses went upstairs until they were cut to the new Quincy Center station in 1971. By 2004, the busway remains were closed in weeds. |
