Description
English: Ortgies Model 1920, Small Frame 4th Variation, .25 ACP, S/n 2112, right side, manufactured c.1921-1923, at Deutsche Werke, Germany. Located Simi Valley, California, 2022. See separate file for the other side of this firearm.

Details: Made c.1921-23. The left side of the slide is marked “Ortgies' Patent. / Deutsche Werke Aktiengesellschaft. / Werk Erfurt.". The right side of the frame behind the trigger and the right side of the slide behind the port are marked with a “Crowned N” proof. The bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard is marked “2112”. The barrel at the port is marked with a “Crowned N” proof and “CAL. 6.35 m/m”. The right flat on the underside of the slide is marked “2112”, found again on the left of the barrel, the inside of the sear-arm and the bottom of the slide. The rear underside of the frame above the grip safety has two odd markings. The grips are smooth walnut with a brass medallion at the top of each grip marked with a stylized “HO” monogram (late style). The Ortgies found considerable favor in competitive shooting. In 1921, prize winners at some 70% of principal shooting competitions had chosen Ortgies 7.65 mm pistols, and the winner of the German championship on September 26, 1921, at Halensee, Germany, took the prize firing an Ortgies. At the other end of the user spectrum, outlaw John Dillinger carried an Ortgies.
