English: Other side of the arch. The second figure with a different coat of arms on the other side of the arch 1607076.
Angel holding shield of arms showing Roet impaling Chaucer (modern). Thomas Chaucer (c.1367-1434), Speaker of the House of Commons and son of Geoffrey Chaucer, the poet, by his wife Philippa Roet. Arms of Roet (Gules, three Catherine Wheels or) (Roet) Canting arms, French rouet = "spinning wheel". Thomas married Matilda (or Maud) Burghersh, second daughter and coheiress of Sir John Burghersh, nephew of Henry Burghersh (1292-1340), Bishop of Lincoln (1320-1340) and Lord Chancellor of England (1328–1330), younger son of Robert de Burghersh, 1st Baron Burghersh (died 1305), and a nephew of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere. The marriage brought him large estates, including the manor of Ewelme, Oxfordshire. Chaucer (modern) is a differenced version of the arms of Burghersh (Argent, a chief gules overall a lion rampant double queued or), which seem later to have been adopted by Thomas Chaucer as his own. They were quartered by de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, ultimate heir of Chaucer. The angel is holding in her right hand an unidentified object which probably has some relevance, perhaps punning relevance, to Chaucer heraldry. (as does the one on the other side of the arch) |
