According to Charles Stirton, leading botanist for this genus, he intends to separate the members of O. thomii which have purple flowers borne on long pedunculate inflorescences (2-4 times the length of leaves) and blackish calyces and standard without yellow and white nectar guide. He intends to name this new species O. basilicum (in reference to its distinctive flowers). The new species occurs on the Klein Rivier Mountains plus an outlier on Napier and Bredasdorp Mountain.
