English: Main entrance to Ottenschlag Castle.
Ottenschlag may have been founded by Otto von Lautisdorf in 1100. The castle, with its three towers was started in 1523 and the Haupttor or main gate is dated 1556. In 1596 Ottenschlag was the scene of armed conflict during the peasant uprisings. During the Reformation in the 16th Century Ottenschlag became a center of Protestantism. In the Thirty Years' War the Swedes besieged the castle and ruined place and church. Ottenschlag was a staging point on the Imperial Poststrasse (postal route) to Bohemia. The town has been ravaged by fire on six occasions, most recently in 1911. On 20 April 1945 Ottenschlag was bombed by the Russians bombers when 56 houses were hit. |
