Patchen re-duced his record during the season to2:03, and for a short period enjoyed thestallion championship honors. FrankAgan reduced his record to 2:03^, andthere are hosts of others between thattime and 2:10. In fact, the reduction ofspeed by the pacers during the presentseason has far exceeded the reductionof speed by trotters, and it is to theknights of the lateral brigade that weshall in all probability have to look forthe first horse to compass a mile in twominutes. It is a cheering fact that in spite ofthe hostile legislation in New York,Pennsylvania, Illinois and other States,and the undoubted financial stringency,accentuated by the usual agitation pend-ing a presidential election, that trot-ting and pacing sport has more thanheld its own, that its popularity is un-doubtedly increasing, that the attend-ance at the various meetings through-out the country has been larger than inprevious years, and that the outlook forthe great national sport was never morepromising than now.
