Summary edit
DescriptionOxford Canal north of Willoughby, Northamptonshire - geograph.org.uk - 968598.jpg |
English: Oxford Canal north of Willoughby, Northamptonshire Although the Oxford Canal was authorized in 1769, the engineer (James Brindley) died in 1772, and Samuel Simcock completed the job by 1790. It was a very lengthy windy contour hugging route, and by the late 1820s its route was considerably shortened and straightened by means of aqueducts, massive embankments and deep cuttings. This thoroughly changed the face of the canal north of Braunston.
Take a look at this straight section (Bridge No 83 in the distance) on the Satellite image on Google Maps. The original meandering canal course can still be seen clearly to the west. It also shows clearly on the OS 1:25000 Get-a-Map, and the map on this page. It might also be an interesting teaching point to observe that this derelict section of canal CROSSES a contour line on both maps, which cannot happen - can it? The question would be: which is wrong on the map - the canal or the contour or both or neither? How accurate should we expect these maps to be? |
