| Description | FORT NORFOLK, Va. – An oyster float, full of thousands of spat, or baby oysters, floats on the Elizabeth River near the west side of Norfolk District’s property. Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has partnered with local elementary s to begin an oyster reef, which will improve the quality of water in the Chesapeake Bay. They current oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay is less than 1 percent of its population when John Smith came to Virginia in the early 17th century and described oysters that were as “big as dinner plates.” (U.S. Army photo/Kerry Solan) |
