Description A U.S. Army Air Forces Republic P-47G-15CU Thunderbolt (Curtiss-built c/n 22148, USAAF s/n 42-25254), "UN-M Spirit of Atlantic City" of the Planes of Fame Museum, Chino, California (USA). It carries the serial number of P-47D-5-RE 42-8487 ("Lucky"), which flew with the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group. This aircraft was shot down by the rear gunner of German Dornier Do 217 on 27 March 1944 (MACR 3440). The pilot, Maj. Walker Mahurin, evaded capture with the help of the French resistance and returned to the UK.
