Description |
"The Australian troops that arrived here on Saturday brought with them the ashes of Sergt G Evans VC who died just before the contingent sailed. The ashes were in the charge of Gunner A P Sullivan VC and on Saturday were taken up to Liverpool by Gunner Sullivan and Trumpeter C R White, and handed over to the dead Man's sister. Trumpeter White sounded the Last Post at the military service in Australia and again sounded it when the remains were laid to rest at Liverpool." "Gunner A P Sullivan and Trumpeter C White leaving Euston Station for Liverpool with the ashes." Arthur Percy Sullivan VC died as a result of a fall in London on 9 April 1937. This image is from the collection of Claude Jabez Powter who served in the First World War and with the Australian Contingent for the Coronation of King George VI on 12 May 1937. |
