Description The U.S. Navy Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina "52-P-11" from Patrol Squadron 52 (VP-52), attached to Patrol Wing 2 (PATWING TWO) based at Seymour Bay, Galapagos, shown here on 17 January 1942 as a crew from the light cruiser USS Richmond (CL-9) attempted to salvage the downed aircraft. The PBY-5 BuNo 2368 of VP-52 made a hard a landing off Galopagoas Island on 9 January 1942 due to fuel exhaustion. The crew (pilot Lt(jg) W.T. Sutherland, ENS W.J. Lahodney, RM1 L.L. Weiss (NAP), RM2 J.P. Carlson, SEA1 H.C. Martin, AMM2 J.W. Miller, and RM3 W.B. Valyou) was rescued. The crewless plane was taken under tow by USS Richmond (CL-9) eight days later but sank in bad weather.
