4. Liège. - La Maison Curtius ». Nous voici passés des bords de la Lys à ceux de la Meuse, au cœur de Liège la «cité ardente », capitale de la Wallonie à 1a fois par son importance et le caractère, sa vivacité d'esprit de ses habitants. Si Liége n'a jamais égalé la prospérité de Gand, Bruxelles et Anvers, dans les siècles du Moyen-Age, elle a cependant connu une brillante période communale dont subsistent de nombreux vestiges. témoin ce prestigieux hôtel Curtius qui dresse sur le Quai de Maestricht l'imposante et originale conception d'architecture Renaissance, destinée dans son origine à abriter les jours de Messire Arnould de Goé, chanoine du chapitre de Saint-Barthélemy, merveilleuse basilique romane toute proche. Le nom d'Hôtel ou «Maison Curtius» est un rappel populaire d'un propriétaire subséquent : Jean de Corte (qui latinisa, selon la mode, son nom en Curtius), grand industriel et fabricant d'armes du XVIIe siècle, le Cockerill de l'époque. La fierté, l'opulence de lignes de l'habitation devait merveilleusement convenir au personnage qu'elle abrita. Les salons en enfilade. aux plafonds travaillés, aux lambris sculptés en plein bois, aux cheminées monumentales, font évoquer les fêtes de jadis dont ils furent les témoins. Et quelle chute après tant de splendeur : en 1627, l'Hôtel Curtius fut érigé en «mont-de-piété»! Il a heureusement retrouvé un certain lustre, et, miraculeusement préservé au cours de siècles qui ont détruit tant de choses, il est devenu - cadre idéal - le Musée Archéologique Liégeois. |
