Present Perfect Tense

Definition

Present perfect tense is a form of verb used to express an action or situation that started in the past and is still continuing until now or has been completed at a certain point in time in the past but the effect is still ongoing.

Structure

Present perfect tense is formed with:

  • Auxilary verb (has or have)
  • Past Principle (V3)

Note:

  • have for I, you and plural subject

Plural pronoun (they, we) and plural noun (boys, men)

  • has for singular subject

Third person singular object (he, she, it) and singular noun (name or man) It can be positive Sentence (+), negative sentence (-) and interrogative sentance (?)

(Verbal)

Subject + has/have + V3

(Nominal)

Subject + has/have + been + ANA

(Negative)

Subject + has/have + not + V3

(Interogative)

Wh-word + has/have + S + V3? Has/have + subject + ANA

Example:

  1. I have just finished my homework (+)
  2. He has not learned a lot of english language (-)
  3. Have you seen the movie yet? (?)

It can be shortened by using Contraction:

  1. I’ve just finished my homework
  2. He hasn’t learned a lot of english language
  3. She’s worked

Present perfect tense is used for:

  • To talk about life experiences
  • To talk about recent past events
  • To talk about a state that started in the past and continues up to now
  • To talk about an action that has been done several times (repetition) up until now.

Here are some adverbs that are commonly used to express the present perfect tense:

  1. Yet
  2. Already
  3. Just
  4. Ever
  5. Never
  6. Recently
  7. For
  8. Since
  9. So far
  10. Up to now
  11. Up until now
