editDescriptionPPG Place, PPG Place and 3rd Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA - 53613145499.jpg |
English: Built in 1981-1984, this Postmodern-style skyscraper was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee for PPG Industries, formerly the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, to serve as their headquarters. The tower stands 40 stories and 635 feet (194 meters) tall, and is the third-tallest building in Pittsburgh. The building was based on the Cathedral of Learning, with a distinctive silhouette inspired by Gothic architecture, which is clad in blue glass with dark mullions, a tall tower with decorative pinnacles, a series of lower buildings around the tower and plaza, and a winter garden with a multi-gable roof. The building today remains home to PPG Industries, as well as various commercial office tenants. |
