Description

O Castelo de Estremoz foi construído no Sec. XIII, entre os reinados de D. Afonso III e de D. Diniz. Este rei viveu no seu Paço Real desde 1281, altura do seu noivado com D. Isabel de Aragão, mais tarde Rainha Santa Isabel, que aqui veio a falecer em Julho de 1336. 

      Foi também aqui que viveu, durante alguns anos, e morreu D.Pedro I. 
      Serviu de quartel general às tropas de D. Nuno Álvares Pereira na Batalha dos Atoleiros em 1384
      Foi praça forte no reinado de D. Afonso VI servindo de armazém de munições e de apoio às tropas que travaram as Batalhas de Linhas de  Elvas, Ameixial e Montes Claros.  Neste reinado o castelo sofreu uma violenta explosão num paiol de pólvora, que o destruiu assim como a grande parte da cidadela.
     Foi D. João V quem procedeu à reconstituição do Paço Real, incluindo os antigos aposentos da Rainha Santa e das várias casas destruidas.
 

Em finais dos anos 60 foi transformado em pousada, Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel, uma das mais monumentais e luxuosas do nosso país, pois mantém ainda todas as marcas da sua História. Nos anos antecedentes ainda funcionou como a Escola Comercial e Industrial de Estremoz.
