Description
English: Limestone in the Mississippian of South Dakota, USA.

South Dakota's Black Hills have many limestone cave systems, including two of the world's longest caves - Jewel Cave and Wind Cave. Seen here is a limestone outcrop near the natural entrance to Wind Cave. Both Jewel Cave and Wind Cave are developed in the Lower Mississippian Pahasapa Limestone.

Limestone is a common sedimentary rock composed of calcite (CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). Most limestone are ancient warm, shallow ocean deposits.

From park signage:

Paha Sapa Limestone

All Black Hills caves have formed in this layer 300 to 600 feet thick. Originally it was laid down on a shallow seabottom about 300 million years ago. Its name derives from the Lakota word meaning "Black Hills".
