British Railways Brush Type 4 Co-Co class 47/4 diesel-electric locomotive number 47627 City of Oxford of Old Oak Common TMD stands at Paignton North signal box 11 signal awaiting departure from Paignton station with the 09:55 (Daily) Paignton to London Paddington. Wednesday 12th August 1987

Paignton North signal box was located by the Up Main line alongside Torbay Road level crossing, and was a Great Western Railway type 5 design fitted with a 13 lever Great Western Railway Double Twist frame which was opened circa.1890, replacing an earlier signal box located on the opposite side of the level crossing. The original double twist locking was replaced by tappet locking at some time and the level crossing gates were taken out of use on 5th November 1976 with the replacement lifting barriers being commissioned on 28th November 1976. Closure came on 26th March 1988 when control of the level crossing passed to Paignton South signal box by closed circuit television

Paignton North signal box 11 signal (Up Main Home) is carried on a tubular steel post which was moved on 28th November 1976 twelve feet further from the signal box in connection with the installation of the level crossing barriers. On the post is a white diamond which indicates to the driver that his train is occupying a track circuit that indicates his presence to the signalman. Beyond the footbridge is a British Railways Western Region right hand bracket signal carried on a tubular steel post which carries (left to right) Paignton North signal box 3 signal (Down To Up Main Inner Home) is carried and 2 (Down Main Inner Home) with Paignton South signal box Down Main fixed distant signal below it. The signal was installed on 11th November 1962
