Description
English: According to Hindu calendar, Festival of Holi is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima. All the bad things are get vanished in the fire of Holi. So, holi is the symbol of victory of good over evil. In Konkan region of Maharashtra, and specifically in Ratnagiri district, festival of Holi is called as Shimaga (शिमगा) or Shimagotsav (शिमगोत्सव) in Marathi. Here, it is celebrated in the period from fifth day of Phalgun to first day of Chaitra month of Hindu calendar i.e. almoist for 25 days. Traditions slightly vary in every village, but the level of enthusiasm & devotion is same and huge. Performance of folk art is seen in this period. Generally, devotees visit temples to seek blessings of God. But in this period of Shimagotsav, Palanquins of Deities of every village visit all homes in village. So, obviously devotees feel honoured and they perform rituals of God. Idols of deities are placed in wooden Palanquins (Palakhi). Folk dance is performed by lifting this Palanquin on shoulder by two men and dancing in circular manner. One by one, another man takes palanquin on his shoulder while dancing. This is called as Palakhinrutya (पालखीनृत्य) in Marathi. Sometimes, one person holds the Palanquin on his head and dances. Mainly this dance is performed by men. But sometimes women also perform this dance. Drum & Tasha (ढोल-ताशा) also played while dancing which adds excitement. This dance is done very skillfully so that there should not be any harm to Diety in Palanquin. This folk dance is the heritage of skill, power & devotion.
