Il portico di tre campate con volte a crociera e arcate a pieno centro su due colonne in botticino dal capitello tuscanico, è di impianto cinquecentesco, ma ha assunto un aspetto neoclassico per la presenza delle porte architravate, delle finestre con infer­riate, delle lesene che scompartiscono le pareti, delle lunette con vetri o a finte vetrate, dello scaloncino che porta al piano superiore, nel lato di mattina. In alto, sulle pareti est ed ovest, sopra le archeggiature cieche, sono incastonati i medaglioni con busti in rilievo scolpiti in marmo di carrara raffiguranti Raffaello e Galileo, commissionati dal Tosio allo scultore bolognese Demo-crito Gandolfi nel 1832.
