Deutsch: Chiaramonte Steri Palace auch Palazzo Chiaramonte. Bauherr dieser mittelalterlichen Burg war der Graf Manfred Chiaramonte, Sproß einer sehr reichen und mächtigen sizilianischen Adelsfamilie im frühen vierzehnten Jahrhundert in Palermo. Am 01. Juni 1392 ließ Martin I. von Sizilien, der 1389 Maria geheiratet hatte, Andrea Chiaramonte, den letzten Spross der Familie, auf der Piazza Marina als Aufführer vor dem Palazzo Chiaramonte in Palermo enthaupten, da Andrea sich seinem Anspruch auf den Königstitel Siziliens widersetzt hatte. Der Palazzo wurde zunächst zu einer Residenz oftmals grausamer Herrscher der Insel. Im siebzehnten und achtzehnten Jahrhundert diente dieser festungsartiger Palazzo als Sitz des Chef-Inquisitor der Insel, bzw. als Gefängnis und Folterstätte. Während dieser Zeit schmachten hier tausende Menschen, 188 von ihnen, die meisten von ihnen Frauen, wurden als Hexen auf dem Scheiterhaufen "im Namen des Herrn" verbrannt. Heute dient der alte Palast der Universität von Palermo. Einige Zimmer sind für Besucher geöffnet. |
