Français : Parc du Marché à foin : rues Saint-Paul et de l’Inspecteur, vers 1943-1944
« Vers 1943, deux ouvriers longeaient les balançoires du parc du marché à foin en se rendant au travail dans le quartier industriel de Griffintown. Toujours actif dans les années 1940, le marché à foin avait été établi à l’intersection des rues Saint-Paul et Inspecteur en 1865. Ouvert toute l’année, c’était entre janvier et mars qu’il connaissait la plus grande affluence. Cela plaisait bien aux agriculteurs de la Rive-Sud qui traversaient plus facilement le fleuve pour se rendre à Montréal grâce au pont de glace. Arrivés en ville, les cultivateurs faisaient peser leur foin à la balance du marché, ce qui permettait d’établir le prix avant la vente. Si le foin était le carburant des chevaux de trait, la paille servait à l’entretien des animaux logés dans l’étable, en arrière-cour. Le cheval devant laisser sa place aux moyens de transport modernes, le marché à foin de Griffintown disparut avec la construction du viaduc du Canadien National en 1943 et de l’autoroute Bonaventure en 1967. »
