Description

With San Francisco being way too gloomy and cold, I am spending my morning in sunny Contra Costa County. My destination is Concord, 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, and home to yours truly during the dot-com boom era.

This tower is the symbol of Concord's mid-20th Century development, Park & Shop.

Park & Shop, developed in the 1950s, is one of the first motorist-oriented suburban malls in the San Francisco Bay Area. With automobile ownership becoming commonplace and suburban expansions happening around all major US cities, even seemingly anti-motorist San Francisco Bay Area was no exception; Concord became a bedroom community for those working in San Francisco or Oakland but needing cheaper, more spacious housing.

When Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) was built, Concord became BART's inland terminus as well; BART's Concord line was extended to nearby Bay Point, in the Sacramento River Delta, in the 1990s as the dot-com boom brought even more people into the Bay Area and far-flung Sacramento River Delta communities became the newest bedroom communities.
