Notes

(Plate V.) In that year Parmigianino was only 22 years old, and it seems impossible to connect the style of this portrait with his early works. The author is in my oppinion, Girolamo Mazola, called Bedoli. The head of the page is very closely related to many similar heads in Bedoli's pictures, and I think it will be sufficient to recall the head of a child in the well-known Conception in Parma. The background of leaves is also very characteristic of this master. This double portrait is certainly one of the most important portraits - not only of Bedoli, but of the whole School of Parma."
