Summary edit

Description
English: Part of the "Dance of Death", Hexham Abbey. The idea of the "Dance of Death" had come to England from Paris where a series of 15th C paintings was accompanied by conversations in verse between Death and his victims. They depicted the fact that Death may visit at any time, young or old, rich or poor - and so Death, represented by a skeleton, was pictured with people from all ranks of life, from emperor to peasant. This image shows Death dancing with a cardinal; it is the leftmost of the four panels in the second (up) row to the left of the lectern in 732190. The other panels depict Death dancing with a king, an emperor and a pope. {Source: Hexham Abbey Guide p18.
