Summary

edit
Description Shrine fragment from William of York's shrine in York Minster. From the York Museums Trust/The Yorkshire Museum. Exhibit tag from temporary exhibit in the British Museum reads: "Shrine Fragment 1330s Stone. This fragment formed part of a corner of Saint William's shrine, which stood in the nave of York Minster until 1541. Saint William was Archbishop of York and became the city's patron saint after his death. The three-storey shrine allowed pilgrims to view the tomb through a seires of arches. It was carved with religious images, everyday scenes and grotesque beast. Only a few, privileged, people were allowed to enter the shrine."
